Epiloge "We are raising a generation...without a future..." Bill Clinton Optimism, hope and a belief in constant Progress have been cornerstones of the American Dream for more than 200 years. To the extent that the 20th Century has been called the American century, this notion of Progress could well be seen as the greatest Icon of our Age. Yet as we approach the 21st Century there is a definite sourness, a Growing Anxiety that this icon, this great Locomotive is going off the rails. Are we really better off today than our grandparents generation? What lies ahead for our grandchildren? How will they view all of this so called Progress in fifty years time? What have we left for them? What's more the suspicion exists that the whole notion of Perpetual Progress may have been a ruse all along to keep us reaching into our back pockets, to keep us madly consuming in the present without any regard to the future consequences of our actions. Merchants of Myth have amassed fortunes selling us products we think we want. We are Over-Consuming to the point where there is a dangerous possibility that the Ecological Fallout may be irreversible. As if the enviromental pollution wasn't bad enough it is even more frightening to contemplate the damage and degradation to our Collective Psyche. The purveryors of fantasy and popular culture have anesthesized us to Violence and Horror and created a culture of Information Anxiety where we are overwhelmed by gigabytes of Data. Like Magicians at work, they've had us all looking "over there" while the real stuff's been happening "over here". The "over here" is now on our doorsteps, in our backyards, in our broken families,in our violent schoolhouses...our collapsing planet. But who are these Magicians? Are they predators perpetrating a great crime against an Innocent Prey? It's so easy to play the blame game...to become a Victim...but surely it is Us. We are all accountable. It's time to stop complaining and try to focus. How are we going to restore sanity to this great Genetic Experiment? How will you? The 13th Generation is here..... |
