Toronto review

SAGA Returns Home with a Bang

Friday night marked the return Home for Canadian Rock legends SAGA at a Sold Out performance at Toronto’s Hard Rock
Café. The show sold out weeks in advance in anticipation of the Group return to the city that was home for many years.

With the group now living, half in L.A. and the remainder still in Toronto, It was a warm homecoming and a good debut of
the newest member of the band Christian Simpson who has taken over the drumming duties from Steve Negus after his
  retirement from the music business.

The show in no way disappointed the sold out house as the band took the crowd on a musical journey through its 20+
releases with a few very special surprises. Opening with the first two tracks off their latest release “NETWORK”.
Vocalist Michael Sadler was in top form as he belted out hit after hit. After roughly 6 songs Michael addresses the
audience and said that they had been asked to played one of their classic recordings in it’s entirety, with the excitement
building in the crowd he announces “This is WORLS APART” this nine song recording holds some of the bands biggest hits
and even more AOR classics. From the opener ON THE LOOSE to the melodic ballad of NO REGRETS this was a surprise no
  one was expecting.

The show progressed into a wonderful piano solo from the incomparable Jim Gilmour (did I hear some Gen 13 in there?)
into a great solo version of the classic Scratching the Surface, at this time Jim was joined on stage by Michael Sadler as
they belted out BELIEVE from the new release.

As the show closed with DON’T BE LATE there was no way the crowd was letting them go with out more music.
Then unexpectly the General Manager of the Hard Rock made his way onto the stage and took the microphone “How
about this Great Canadian Band” he says as the crowd responds back with a roar “What a great night but you know what
we have nothing from this band "SAGA" to hang on our walls here in the Café, and they have one of the worlds most
underrated world class guitar players, truly one of the best I have ever seen lets see if we can convince Ian Crichton to
come out here and give us one of his guitars to hang on the wall here” with the this crowd raises the noise level to that
of a jet engine and Ian made his way back onto the stage.

He smiles and says something in the ear of the General Manager and motions for a guitar. He is handed a guitar and a
silver pen he signs the guitar but does not hand it to the general manager but to some lucky fan a few rows back in the
crowd. The lucky fan (Peter) was escorted backstage after the show to meet the entire band and pose for photo’s with
  Ian and his new Guitar.

I have been to more concerts than I care to remember but never have I seen something like this, it was truly amazing,
I tell you what, in the years to come you will hear 1000’s more people than where actually at this show claiming “I was
  there the night when…”

All in all it was a great return home for one of Canada’s classiest exports.

Steve Negus news: Update at stevenegus.com

Well, I guess my birthday is a good day to put an update on the website!! Last night Nicole and I went to see Saga in
Toronto...a very strange feeling indeed!!! It was the first time I attended a Saga show when I didn't have to play!! It
was great to see the boys and to check out the "new guy" behind the kit!! Christian did well...(although I could show
him a thing or two!!! ha ha) I'll keep this short because I have to get ready for my party tonight...lots of friends coming
  over!!

I'm sure you are all curious about the current status of the solo cd...it is coming along nicely!! Michael Sadler, Jim and
Ian (Crichton) agreed to do some tracks on the new cd. Daryl (Jim Gilmour) already put down a dazzling piano track
on one of the songs!! Al Langlade was down here a couple of weeks ago, (from Thunder Bay) and we did some great
work, bringing things up to date, and working on the rough spots; he arrives again tomorrow afternoon, and we'll
spend a couple more days working on the songs... (see picture...that's Al!!)

There are 13 tracks that we are currently working on. 12 with vocals, and Al is writing the lyrics for those. Dare to
Dream is still the title of the cd and also the title track,... I love that song!!!

I also think it is time to put a little taste of the new cd on the website, so, I will be posting a couple of mp3's on here
this week... Ok, got to get organized for the party....all the best to all of my loyal supporters and friends!! Stay tuned!!

  Bye for now,
  Steve
